However, though the Tsunami in 2005 received lots of aid at the time of the disaster, the nations that were affected are still suffering today and do not have the aid they need anymore. When something drastic like the Tsunami in 2005 or the earthquake in Haiti occur, people everywhere will feel like they’re helping by donating to all these causes towards the area hit. It’s all over the news and fresh in everyone’s mind. But soon enough, the news stories will die down, people will start to forget, and the aid needed to rebuild these nations begins to disappear. It takes a long time to restore a country, especially a country like Haiti. By all means, I do agree that people should donate to causes other than Haiti, but the reality is, Haiti is what people automatically care about the most at this time. It was a serious disaster. Bigger than most we’ve seen in a while due to the extreme conditions these people lived in. Thus, we automatically want to donate our funds to what we feel needs it most in this desperate time. This article says something that needs to be said. Don’t give money just to Haiti.
Sure, donating money in a time of need is absolutely useful and will no doubt be helpful when catastrophe strikes. Charities like Médecins Sans Frontières and the US Red Cross get lots of money out of telethons, SMS donations, etc. but all with one unfortunate string attached. The string being that money donated can only be used in Haiti. This presents a problem, especially when large sums of money are donated, much more than what is needed for a disaster. For example, since the 2005 Tsunami, the US Red Cross has only been able to spend 83% of all its donations, money which could be used to help the people of Haiti now.
By donating to general funds, you give the charities freedom to use your donated money most effectively by allowing them to use it where it is needed the most. Haiti is in trouble now, but who knows who could be hit next.
Now, go read about Médecins sans Frontières (always do your research first!) and then donate to MSF’s Emergency Relief Fund (if you’re a US resident) or here for Canadian residents.
The money you donate to Haiti (or any disaster) is strictly for disaster relief, not development. As far as I can tell, charities such as the Red Cross/Crescent, Medecins sans Frontieres, Mercy Corps, etc. are primarily emergency aid agencies. Money should go into development assistance, but that’s not what people donate to when they see “DONATE NOW!!!!” in ads and when celebrities tell them to.

What’s changed over this decade? via i.imgur.com
This really puts things into perspective. How can we be changing so fast? It’s pretty scary.
Looking at the technological statistics in this image (and the fact that we’re communicating in this way today), the amazing progress shows why we need to protect the neutrality of the internet (not just to computers but to the mobile as well). It shows that in the last decade we’ve given the ability for the majority of people to receive more information at any time and any place to facilitate better judgement, which leads to greater personal freedoms and paves a path to a more prosperous future for all. It’s why we need to protect the internet from grubby hands who, for the sake of short term gains, want to stifle long term innovations and knowledge by creating different tiers to protect sectors and industries that are failing as a result of natural redundancy.
May the 10’s be as (if not more) innovative as the 00’s.
marreka asked: Why do you keep asking yourself questions?
I’ve gone crazy.
marreka asked: Is this useful at all?
I’m not too sure.
marreka asked: What can I ask you?
Anything.
Cool! Stop-motion photography of a 42KM stretch of Yonge Street from Aurora to Lake Ontario. Although for some reason Yonge and Dundas didn’t appear in this (or I missed it because it was too fast). Either way, pretty nifty.
So rad.
As many of you probably know, Toronto’s Yonge Street is dubbed as one of the longest streets in the entire world. Two photographers decided to walk from the intersection of Yonge St & Wellington St (in Aurora) south along Yonge until they hit Lake Ontario. It took them about 14 hours to walk over 42 kilometers, while taking photos documenting the day. They’ve turned those thousands of photos in to this incredible stop-motion video called “At The End Of Yonge Street”.
Living in Canada
Replace Florida with Seattle and you’ve got me.
“Moved to Florida. I can’t imagine why anyone in their right mind would ever want to live in such a God forsaken place as Canada.”
DEAR DIARY
Aug. 12 - Moved to our new home in Canada. I am so excited.
It's so beautiful here. The mountains are so majestic.
Can hardly wait to see them with snow covering them.
Oct. 14 - Canada. It is the most beautiful place on earth.
The leaves have turned all colours and shades of red and
orange. Went for a ride through the beautiful countryside
and saw some deer. They are so graceful. Certainly they are
the most wonderful animals on earth. This must be paradise.
I love it here.
Nov. 11 - Remembrance Day. Deer season starts soon.
I can't imagine anyone wanting to kill such a gorgeous
creature. Hope it snows soon. I love it here.
Dec. 2 - It snowed last night. Woke up to find everything
blanketed with white. It looks like a postcard. We went
outside and cleaned the snow off the steps and shoveled
the driveway. We had a snowball fight (I won). When the
snow plough came by we had to shovel the driveway
again. What a beautiful place. I love Canada.
Dec. 12 - More snow last night. The snow plough did his
trick again to the driveway. I love it here.
Dec. 19 - More snow last night. Couldn't get out of the
driveway to get to work. It's beautiful here but I'm
exhausted from shoveling. Fucking snow plough.
Dec. 22 - More of that white shit fell last night. I've got
blisters on my hands and a sore back from shoveling.
I think the snow plough hides around the corner until
I'm done shoveling the driveway. Asshole.
Dec. 25 - Merry Fucking Christmas! More frigging snow.
If I ever get my hands on the son-of-a-bitch who drives
the snow plough, I swear I'll kill the bastard. Don't know
why they don't use more salt on the roads to melt
the fucking ice.
Dec. 27 - More white shit last night. Been inside for three
days now except for shoveling out the driveway after that
snow plough goes through every time. Can't go anywhere,
the car's stuck in a mountain of white shit and it's so
frigging cold. The weatherman says to expect another
10 inches of the shit again tonight. Do you know how
many shovels full of snow 10 inches is?
Dec. 28 - That fucking weatherman was wrong. We got
34 inches of the shit this time. At this rate it won't melt
before summer. The snow plough got stuck up in the
road and that bastard came to my door and asked to
borrow my shovel. After I told him that I had already
broken six shovelsshoveling out all the shit he had
pushed into my driveway, I damn near broke my last
one over his fucking head.
Jan. 4 - Finally got out of the house today. Went to the
store to get food and on my way back a damned deer
ran in front of the car. Did about $3,000 damage to the
car. Those fucking beasts should be killed. The bastards
are everywhere. Wish the hunters had exterminated them
all last November.
May 3 - Took the car to the garage in town. Would you
believe the thing is rusted out from all that fucking salt
they put all over the roads.
May 10 - Moved to Florida. I can't imagine why anyone in
their right mind would ever want to live in such a God
forsaken place as Canada.
